Driving Plate in Lathe Machine

In the ITI Turner trade, proper holding and rotation of the workpiece are essential for accurate machining operations. When a workpiece is mounted between centers, it requires a mechanism to transmit motion from the spindle. The driving plate is one such important accessory used in lathe machines. This chapter explains the construction, function, types, uses, and precautions of the driving plate in detail.

Introduction to Driving Plate

A driving plate is a circular plate mounted on the spindle of a lathe machine. It is used to transmit rotary motion to the workpiece through a lathe dog (carrier) when the workpiece is held between centers.

It plays a key role in turning operations where high accuracy and alignment are required.

Construction of Driving Plate

The driving plate is made of cast iron or steel to provide strength and durability. It consists of the following parts:

  • Central Hole: Fits onto the spindle nose
  • Slots or Grooves: Used to engage the tail of the lathe dog
  • Flat Surface: Provides support for rotation
  • Set Screws or Pins: Used for secure mounting

The slots are designed to accommodate different types of lathe dogs.

Function of Driving Plate

  • Transmits rotary motion from spindle to workpiece
  • Works in combination with lathe dog
  • Ensures uniform rotation of workpiece
  • Maintains alignment during machining

Working Principle

The driving plate is mounted on the spindle, and the workpiece is held between centers. A lathe dog is attached to the workpiece, and its tail fits into the slot of the driving plate.

When the spindle rotates, the driving plate rotates, which in turn rotates the lathe dog and the workpiece.

Types of Driving Plate

1. Plain Driving Plate

A simple plate with slots for engaging the lathe dog.

2. Slotted Driving Plate

Contains multiple slots for better flexibility.

3. Face Plate with Driving Pins

A faceplate used as a driving plate with additional pins for holding workpieces.

Uses of Driving Plate

  • Turning operations between centers
  • Machining shafts and cylindrical parts
  • Precision machining work

Advantages

  • Ensures accurate rotation
  • Simple and reliable design
  • Suitable for precision work

Limitations

  • Requires use of lathe dog
  • Setup takes time

Precautions While Using Driving Plate

  • Ensure proper fitting on spindle
  • Check alignment before operation
  • Secure the lathe dog properly
  • Keep hands away from rotating parts

Maintenance of Driving Plate

  • Keep clean and free from dirt
  • Check for wear and damage
  • Lubricate contact surfaces

Application in Turner Workshop

In the Turner trade, driving plates are widely used for machining workpieces held between centers. They ensure proper rotation and help achieve accurate machining results.

They are commonly used in turning long shafts and precision components.

Importance in Machining

The driving plate is essential for transmitting motion effectively and maintaining alignment. It improves machining accuracy and efficiency.

Conclusion

The driving plate is an important lathe accessory used for rotating workpieces held between centers. It works with the lathe dog to transmit motion from the spindle.

Understanding its construction and function helps trainees perform machining operations safely and accurately.

In conclusion, proper use of the driving plate ensures precision and efficiency in the ITI Turner trade.
