Method of Taper Angle Measurement

In the ITI Turner trade, accurate measurement of taper angles is essential for producing precise conical components. Tapered surfaces are commonly used in machine tools, shafts, and fittings. Proper measurement ensures correct fitting and performance of components. This chapter explains various methods used for taper angle measurement in detail.

Introduction to Taper Angle

A taper is a gradual change in diameter along the length of a workpiece. The angle formed between the axis of the workpiece and the tapered surface is known as the taper angle.

Important Terms

  • Large Diameter (D): Diameter at the larger end
  • Small Diameter (d): Diameter at the smaller end
  • Length of Taper (L): Length over which taper exists
  • Taper Angle (α): Angle between axis and surface

Formula for Taper Angle

tan α = (D – d) / (2L)

This formula is used to calculate the taper angle.

Methods of Taper Angle Measurement

1. Using Vernier Caliper

Measure the large diameter (D), small diameter (d), and length (L) using a vernier caliper. Then calculate the taper angle using the formula.

Steps

  • Measure D and d
  • Measure L
  • Apply formula

2. Using Micrometer

For more accurate measurement of diameters, a micrometer can be used.

Steps

  • Measure D and d precisely
  • Calculate angle

3. Using Sine Bar and Slip Gauges

A sine bar is used with slip gauges to measure the angle accurately.

Principle

sin θ = Height / Length of sine bar

Steps

  • Place sine bar on surface plate
  • Adjust slip gauges
  • Calculate angle

4. Using Bevel Protractor

A bevel protractor is used to directly measure the taper angle.

Steps

  • Place blade along taper surface
  • Read angle from scale

5. Using Vernier Bevel Protractor

Used for more accurate angle measurement.

Steps

  • Align instrument with taper
  • Read main scale and vernier scale
  • Calculate total angle

6. Using Taper Plug Gauge

Used to check internal tapers.

7. Using Taper Ring Gauge

Used to check external tapers.

Precautions While Measuring Taper

  • Ensure accurate measurement of diameters
  • Use calibrated instruments
  • Avoid parallax error
  • Keep instruments clean

Importance of Taper Measurement

  • Ensures proper fitting of parts
  • Maintains accuracy in machining
  • Improves quality of components

Application in Turner Workshop

In the Turner trade, taper angle measurement is used to check the accuracy of tapered components such as shafts, tool shanks, and machine parts.

Proper measurement ensures correct assembly and functioning.

Advantages of Accurate Measurement

  • Improves product quality
  • Reduces errors
  • Ensures interchangeability

Conclusion

Taper angle measurement is an important aspect of machining in the ITI Turner trade. Various methods are used depending on accuracy requirements.

Understanding these methods helps in selecting the right technique for measurement.

In conclusion, accurate taper measurement ensures precision and quality in engineering components.
